Downton Abbey premiered its sixth and final season on PBS last Sunday night. The upstairs/downstairs soap opera continues to dominate and is a certifiable hit around the world.

The paradox of Downton’s appeal is that legions of fans love the lavish and lush settings and costumes of the Crawley clan, but also cheer on the hardworking help downstairs, excited to witness the deterioration of the rigid class system. It’s a dramatic tug of war that has served the series well during its run, and perhaps into the future.

Lesley Nicol portrays Mrs. Patmore in the series. She’s the no-nonsense but big-hearted cook at the Abbey. The British actress spoke to Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore in an exclusive interview about her role in the series, the show’s global success, and what to expect after Season 6.
